The Whiteman and Adjacent Families

This is part of Roger Clarke's Family Web-Site.

It provides details of the family of my mother and her family – Irene Gladys Whiteman-Clarke (1926-2004), as follows:

• the Whiteman line (Rene's father's name-line - bottom-left corner of my FamilyWeb)
• the Smart line (Rene's father's mother - centre-left corner of my FamilyWeb). We know so little about their origins that I've left it embedded in the Whiteman page
• the Russell line (Rene's mother's father - centre-right of my FamilyWeb)
• the Winfield line (Rene's mother's mother - bottom-right corner of my FamilyWeb)
• the Wagstaff line (Rene's father's father's mother - centre-left of my FamilyWeb)
  • the upper line (the great-grand-mother who married the Whiteman in 1838)
  • the lower line (containing Rene's only other known blood-relations)
  • the upper upper Wagstaff and Maxey lines (back to 1575 - well done, Jane!)
  • the Wallis, Geary and Favell lines (the 1776 Wagstaff's mothers' lines)

Rene (1926-2004) had very few relations of her own generation – a grand total of only 2 first cousins, plus 6 more distant cousins only 3 of whom she ever met. They were:

• First Cousins:
  • Joyce Whiteman / Morris 1929-1995, who has a son, David (Beds)
  • Maggie Smart / Roberts 1923-1990 (Houghton Conquest)
• First Cousin Once-Removed:
  • David Morris b. 1953, son of Joyce Whiteman / Morris (Beds)
• Second Cousins Once-Removed:
  • Beryl Hawkes 1925-1992? (Luton)
  • Stella Cope / Daye / Francis 1922-1995 (Portsmouth)
• Third Cousins Once-Removed:
  • Catherine Irons / Gravelle b. 1930 (Luton ... Essex) [discovered only after Rene's death]
  • Maggie Smart / Roberts, again - Maggie's father married his own second cousin once-removed
  • Stella's children, Rona Patricia b. 1951 and Ian Francis b. 1956 [never met?]

Acknowledgements

Much of the information on the Whiteman, Russell and Winfield lines comes from my own research, but the hard work on the Wagstaff lines was undertaken by Jane Gravelle of Nazeing in Essex, and by my cousin (on my father's side) Anne Kratzmann.

Given the scale of the effort involved, it inevitably contains lots of errors. Please advise me of any errors that are problematical and need to be fixed!! And please feel free to provide additional information about the clan.
