The Russell Line

DEFUNCT – Superseded by separate pages for the Upper Segment and Middle Segment

This page is part of Irene Gladys Whiteman's web-site.

It contains the family-tree of her Great-Grandparents in her mother's father's line. We have no knowledge of any extant blood-relations in this line – except for ourselves of course ... Her own family line from her parents downwards (including us) is on a separate page.

Thomas RUSSELL, b. 5 Apr 1820 - 4 Apr 1825
Most likely date-range is 5 Apr 1822 - 4 Apr 1823 (interpolated from 1871, 1891 and 1901 Census entries), or 5 Apr 1823 - 4 Apr 1824? (37 in 1861) or 5 Apr 1824 - 4 Apr 1825? (56 in 1881) or 5 Apr 1821 - 4 Apr 1822?? (29 in 1851 Census, probably trying to be closer in age to his older wife), or even 5 Apr 1820 - 4 Apr 1821?? (20 in an uncertain 1841 census entry)
[A possible entry in the 1841 Census, extract 1 and extract 2 has him at No. 63 (unreadable - Bout Gdns??) in Birmingham, aged 20, an Iron Founder. He's in the household of his possible parents? or uncle? James Russell and Sarah, both 50. James is a "Sergeon" (and No. 62 is a Solicitor, No. 74 a Sergeon and Nos. 67 and 68 a Sergeon and a Solicitor). An Iron Founder appears to be a misfit with such professionals, but someone in the household is an Iron Founder, so maybe it was our Thomas]

m. Elizabeth Gibbard/Gibberd, m. Jun qtr 1844, Birmingham 16 381
b. 5 Apr 1817 - 4 Apr 1821. Possible date-ranges are 5 Apr 1820 - 4 Apr 1821 (30 in 1851 Census and 50 in 1871) or 5 Apr 1818 - 4 Apr 1819 (42 in 1861 and 62 in 1881) or 5 Apr 1817 - 4 Apr 1818 (23 in 1841 Census?)
d. after 4 Apr 1881 at c. 60, but before 4 Apr 1891 at c. 70?
[A possible entry in the 1841 Census, and extract has her at Meriden? St, St Matthews?, Birmingham, aged 23 and a warehousewoman, living with an older warehousewoman, Ann Glenn? aged 52.]

In the 1851 Census and extract, the family is in Holyhead Rd, Wednesbury
Thomas is 29 and Elizabeth 30, and they have Henry (aged 1). Thomas is a Gas Fitter.
In the 1861 Census and extract, the family is at King St, Wednesbury
Thomas is 37 and Elizabeth 42, Henry 11 and Fred 1. Thomas is a Gas Fitter.
In the 1871 Census and extract, the family is at 1 Dale St, Wednesbury
Thomas is 48 and Elizabeth 50, Henry 21 (married to Mary 25), and Frederick 13.
Thomas is a Tool Maker, and so is Henry, and Frederick is an Errand boy.
In the 1881 Census and extract, the family is at 70 Canal St, Derby
Thomas is a Toolmaker of 56 (not 58?), Elizabeth 62 (not 60?), Frederick a Tool Maker and Fitter 21.
(Also Sarah Ann, Granddaur, 7, b. Wednesbury. Whose is she? Presumably Henry's first).

In the 1891 Census and extract, Thomas is a Toolmaker-Fitter, widower, 68, living with his younger son Frederick in Kingsbury Rd, Willesden, London
In the 1901 Census and extract, at 78, Thomas is now living with his elder son Henry, at 43 Bloomfield St, St Andrew, Derby

    m. Mary Caddick

    1. Sarah Ann Russell, b. 5 April 1873 - 4 Apr 1874, Wednesbury

In 1881, at 1, in the household

      m. Sep qtr 1920, Derby 7b 1764 (so aged 29)
      m. Eunice GIBBONS
      So there's a possible line of extant Russells, b. c. 1920-35 – 2nd cousins to Rene
  2. Frederick William Russell, b. 1857?-1860!
    b. Wednesbury Staffs, according to all available documents
(Wednesbury is 3 miles NW of West Brom, which is 5 miles NW of Birmingham)
    b. Apr-May 1860 (1861 Census entry at 11 months)
    b. ?? 5 Apr 1957 - 4 Apr 1858 (1871 Census entry at 13)
    b. ?! 5 Apr 1859 - 4 Apr 1860 (1881 Census entry at 21, 1891 Census entry at 31)
This seems to be spurious: b. 20 Apr 1860 (Cert L, R), North Mimms Park Lodge South Mimms (Barnet, nth London)
This might be the right one: b. Dec qtr 1859, Birmingham
In the 1861 Census and extract, at age 1, with parents and brother Henry, in Wednesbury
In the 1871 Census and extract (but aged 13 rather than 11?), in Wednesbury, with his parents Thomas and Elizabeth, and Henry and his new wife Mary
In 1871 an Errand boy, later a Toolmaker-Fitter, later an Engine Fitter
In the 1881 Census and extract, Fred is still with his parents, as a 21-year-old Tool Maker
    m. 16 Apr 1887, at c. 27 (Cert L, R)
    m. Hannah Winfield
    b. 1864 in Spondon Derbyshire.
We're unclear when, but presumably 1884-1887 range.
    They lived in London c. 1887 to c. 1891-92.
In the 1891 Census entry and extract, at 1A St, 11 Kingsbury Rd Neasden Willesden
In the 1901 Census entry and extract, at 42 Milton St, Derby (near his elder brother).
Fred and Hannah were separated between 1901 (when he was c. 40/36, and the children 9-13) and ?1916 (when he was c. 55/51, kids 24-28). Rene thought that Fred may have been in Berlin at some stage. (It's possible the separation had something to do with his work?).
By 1916, Fred was in Portsmouth Dockyards (as shown on his daughter's marriage cert).
    Fred lived 1916-1931 (at c. 55-71) at 36 St Augustine's Rd Southsea.
Possibly Hannah was there before 1916? By the time I asked, in the 1990s, no-one knew.
    Fred d. 29 Aug 1931, at c. 71, at St Mary's Hospital, Portsmouth.
Hannah was presumably still there in 1934, because an inscription in a bible given to her grand-daughter Irene that year contains that address.
She was apparently a pretty tough woman, not particularly pleasant.
Hannah moved to 32 Portland St Clowne nr. Chesterfield, and stayed there.
Hannah d. 1938? at c. 74 (we have spurious death certs, but not the right one)
  1. Frederick Thomas Russell
    b. 1888-1889, Neasden Middlesex
    m. Grace ? but separated, said Rene, with no issue
Worked in Chesterfield with the Midland Bus Company, said Rene
    d. c. 1935?, Chesterfield?, of consumption contracted in WWI
  2. Ann Elizabeth Russell
    b. 1889-90, Neasden Middlesex
    m. ?1. Bailey
    m. ?2. Fred or Wm G. Gard(i)ner Sep qtr? 1940, at c. 50
(a man who had 3 previous wives and 16 previous children)
Lived in Portsmouth? But Tony thinks she lived in Bedford? Why?
Tony never met her. He says she was alive in the mid-to-late 1940s, and he understands she was (very?) unpleasant, but a good dress-maker
    d. >1950?
  3. Hannah Russell, b. Neasden 21 May 1892 (Cert L, R), d. 13 Feb 1952 (Cert L, R)
    James WHITEMAN, b. Houghton Conquest 31 May 1893 (Cert L, R), d. 7 Feb 1954 (Cert L, R)
    m. 27 Feb 1916, Portsmouth (Cert L, R)
It appears that Hannah lived at 36 St Augustine's Rd from at least 1916 until 1941
