The Upper Davidge Family Tree

This directory is a consolidated list of what we believe we know about the ancestry of Kate Davidge, Roger's great-grandmother (his father's father's mother).
Kate is at 1.1.1.1.4.2.7.7.4 below. My father knew nothing of his paternal grandmother, Kate.

It took some sleuthing on my part to establish who Kate was. That voyage of discovery is described here.

The couple of uppermost layers of this family-tree are derived from the John Baker document on the Davidge family tree, provided to us by Sharon Williams of Mississauga Ontario in April 2009. This in turn appears to derive from Nancy Frey in Newcastle Ontario, and Marilyn Davidge, who are working on the Davidge line of Newfoundland - a line that may be from 1.1.1.1.4.2.2 Thomas Davidge (b. 1788)

Nancy thinks that the only extant Davidges are in the line of Martha (at 1.1.1.1.4).

The line of Kate's uncle 1.1.1.1.4.2.7.2 George Davidge (1831-1877) was expanded from the Davidge site run by Johanna (and Terry) Miller, in September 2010

Although there are many uncertainties, it's (to me anyway) extraordinary that a few people's hard work has unearthed a line of documentation for forebears of mine who were almost all peasants, sorry, simple country folk, until the early twentieth century. The earliest identified ancestor was born c.1570. The requirement that (Anglican) parish priests keep registers of births, deaths and marriages, including the surnames of the parents, was only enacted in 1538.
