Remember the ‘new’ Malcolm Fraser library at BHS? It went with the federally funded science block and those large, airy senior classrooms. After BHS, I loved my four years in Brisbane doing B Economics, Dip Ed. I returned to teach at BHS for term one, 1971 before marrying and following Bob to Singleton where he was completing his National Service training. Over the next 12 years I taught all levels in subjects from Economics to English, Accounting to History, in various Brisbane high schools. We had two girls, bushwalked and camped in national parks, and traveled once through Europe.

We moved to Canberra in 1983, just after Bob Hawke broke the drought. I started teaching computer keyboard skills and Business Management in the college system and studied two units in ESL at the then Canberra CAE. Later, I completed two units in Legal Studies towards a (forever unfinished) Grad Dip in Management. By the time I retired in January this year, I had been teaching Legal Studies and History for 15 years, and helping students in their mock trial and moot teams, debating and model UN competitions. I recall very many happy experiences but after 35 years, I have no desire to go on the relief teaching list!

When friends and colleagues were buying coast houses or ski lodge timeshares, we led the ‘tree-change’ (years before we heard the term mentioned) and bought forty acres with a slab cottage and no electricity, between Yass and Gunning. We studied a variety of units in farm management at TAFE. I completed the Owner Classer Wool Classing certificate, and despite the ‘banana republic’ we were able to move in 1995 to nearly 400 acres, suitable for fine wool production. Here, we will always have something more to do, instead of sitting on the veranda. We have begun the conservation of the remnant woodland and management of the native vegetation. We are very involved in our local landcare group.

In March 2006 we sold in Canberra, but visit regularly to see Kirsten, Michael and three grandchildren. Sarah is a Youth Ambassador in Cambodia.
