Mary Lawrence / Cook

I’m Mary Lawrence, now Cook. I’m an older sister of Aileen Lawrence, and did Senior at Bundy High in 1964.

While I was at Teachers’ College in 1965 and 1966, I had a lot to do with Helena Jackowski, Bev Pitt, Jenny See and Donna Studholme, among others, as I spent time with my sister and her friends during the school holidays. I remember having a lot of fun camping out in Jenny See’s garage, then walking that long hike to the beach to enjoy the sun, sand and surf at Bargara, along with coconut oil for the tan and the kiosk for social activity.

In 1967 I was posted back to Bundaberg North State School to begin my 2 years bonded teaching. We were all posted back to our home town then because we were all under 21, and were too young to vote, drink, get married etc (yeah right!!)

I remained in Bundy as my father died that year, and it was the policy of the Department not to transfer people in my situation as I was the only child left at home as support to my aging mother (tongue-in-cheek comment about my independent-minded mother who brought all her daughters up the same way).

I met Gary Cook, my future husband, when he came to Bundy to play Rugby League for Wanderers. We remained in Bundy, me teaching at Walkervale and Thabeban, and Gary working at The Hut, David Jones, Ron Glass Marine, and Salty’s. We had 1 daughter, Alanna, now married with a son, and teaching in Manjimup, WA.

Gary died of melanoma in 1996, and I continued teaching until 2001. I now do volunteer aide work 2 days a week at Bundy North High, and don’t have enough time to do my cardmaking, crossstitch, scrapbooking, reading, sewing, etc.
