Ian Darnell

Pre 1996 c. 1970 2006

After failing to matriculate (P pass in English), Ian joined the Main Roads Department in Bundaberg as a cadet draughtsman in 1967. Ian completed 38 years experience in the Queensland Department of Main Roads as the Principal Technical Advisor (Planning and Design). This work has led to a variety of experience around the state in road planning and design and more recently in planning assessment and policy advice in traffic engineering, road safety and development management. (Bundaberg –9, Barcaldine –4, Brisbane –3, Cloncurry – 4 and Warwick –18).

Ian married Margaret Gunders in Bundaberg on 8 January 1972. Margaret and Ian have two children Jenny (1974) and Steven (1976) both of whom are married with no children at this point in time.

During most of this time, Ian has worked part time in the building design industry in the same locations around the state as his fulltime work has taken him. This has also included some building design work and advice for the department. Ian has completed a variety of projects across a broad spectrum of building types. In February 2005, Ian took all leave due from Main Roads to commence his full time building design practice and cut all links with Main Roads in January 2006. In 2005, Ian won a BDAQ national design award for special projects. You can view this on www.nspire.com.au (under construction) or www.bdaq.com.au/awards and go to 2004.

Despite not matriculating, Ian completed his necessary part time study for a Certificate in Civil Engineering (Design Office Technician) in 1971 and decided to study again in 1991 and obtained a Bachelor of Building Surveying (Distinction) in 1997 and a Graduate Certificate in Civil Engineering in 2001.

Ian and Margaret have remained actively involved with church work throughout their travels around the state and took up playing in the Warwick City Brass Band over the last 15 or so years.

In recognition for his work in the department and the community, Ian received a Main Roads Australia Day achievement medal in 2005.
